Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson aren’t done with Batman yet. In absolutely unsurprising news, Warner Bros. announced that their broody new Batman and his writer-director will return for a sequel to The Batman, which just debuted on HBO Max to the tune of 4.1 million viewers in the first week. That streaming premiere followed on the film earning more than $750 million globally. There was no way this Bat wasn’t headed back to screens.
Neither Reeves nor Warner Bros. offered a single detail, so it may be a while before we know whether Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman—or any of the film’s villains—will make an appearance.
The Batman had the biggest opening weekend of any movie this year and is currently the highest-grossing movie of the year—though Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may knock it down a peg. Dark and gloomy and yet oddly funny (“Thumb drive”) if you refuse to take it as seriously as it seems to take itself, The Batman is, as Emmet Asher-Perrin put it, all vibes. (However, the car chase sequence put it in my head that Matt Reeves ought to direct a Fast and Furious movie—and hey, the last one sadly now needs a director!)
The Batman had tiny Easter eggs and a deleted scene or two and a closing scene that may or may not hint at a villain who may or may not appear later in the Battinson stories; everything is mysterious and unconfirmed at this point. It’s on HBO Max if you would like to return to Gotham right this second.
